Top eight
We're going to do lists here for a while. Tonight it is going to be my top eight (eight, because it is my favorite number and ten just sounds too long) favorite things to eat........when we're being healthy. Unhealthy just wouldn't be an impressive list. A long list, yes, but it'd kind of be like, "duh," if I went on about donuts.......which, a little disclaimer here, none of the healthy stuff listed below compares to my very, very favorite: a fresh maple donut. I'm just not one of those people that can look at a bag of Doritos and think, "disgusting!" But we try. So here's what we eat when we're trying.
1. Beans: I actually don't just tolerate beans. I LOVE beans. Black beans, kidney beans, garbanzo beans, beans cold in a salad, beans warm with rice, beans straight from the pressure cooker. Have you tried to bake brownies from beans? I'm not making it up. They have recipes for this stuff. Disgusting, but it can be done!
2. Cottage Cheese: I never tire or it. I love it with fruit. I love it with tomatoes. I even love it with my beans.
3. Raw, Unsalted Almonds: this is one of my favorite grab and go snacks when I'm feeling hungry and need convenient. Now I did make THESE for a treat during General Conference, which might be stretching it a bit with the healthy thing, but wow, they were awfully tasty.
4. Broccoli: I never eat it raw, but steamed I could eat all day. I love it. I don't, however, love the smell that lingers in my house after cooking it. Are there secrets to getting rid of lingering stinky food smells?
5. Quinoa: We eat this all the time. High in protein so pretty high in calories but a little goes a long way. Our usual is with chicken and steamed veggies and a little feta cheese sprinkled on top. It is yummy, yummy. I've had it in some recipes that other people have made, mostly people from South American countries, and wow, they know how to make this SO good.
6. Beets: Love, love, love, love, love, love, love, love, love, love....................
7. Seafood: I don't cook a lot of this at home, but I do love it. We didn't eat it a whole lot growing up, so I'm not very confident in how to get the best results and it's too expensive to experiment with. Ryan is the man for the job when this is on the menu for the night. (do the prawns at Phats count as healthy, because they are out of this world delicious?!?! Come to think of it. I don't want to know.)
8. Frozen Yogurt: Can you blame me for putting a plug in for the best and healthiest dessert ever?! And I'm not even sick of it yet! I do have some favorite creations. Maybe we'll save that for another post. The yogurt we sell at our shop ranges anywhere from 80-110 calories for 4 oz. I would never tell our customers this, but just to you privileged few who read this blog, a yogurt topped with a snickers bar and a half does not a healthy dessert make. We overhear some of the funniest comments from people, comments like "man, I really loaded up this cup. Oh well. At least it's healthy!" We keep our mouth shut and let them enjoy their moment of bliss.
