Hot Wheels, Snake Skins, Legos and a Legacy

I never admired my grandma so much as when I heard my uncles tell some outrageous story of when they were younger (they're full of crazy stories!)  about beehives and having their beekeeper's gear on but bees had gotten caught inside their head nets or something or other and it didn't end too well....honestly, I don't really remember all the specifics of the story because as they were telling their tale it was mentioned in passing about their snake skins that their mom had hung on the living room wall for display...WHAT !  (am I remembering this story correctly?!)  Forget the bees...Back up!  You've got to be some kind of woman to encourage, even allow, such a thing....and I'm not even terrified by snakes!  But when it comes to what gets put up for display in my house, I have a hard time not having my way.  Mission paraphernalia all got tucked away when my hubby and I got hitched...I was not about to adorn any part of my house in anything "Peru."  I think my grandma just understood something that I don't yet.  (Well, I understand it, I'm just "working" on it ever sooooo slowly)  That must have meant a whole lot to my uncles that what they thought was important (snakes, lizards, all reptiles in fact) was important to their mom because THEY were important to her.  And she SHOWED them that...and everyone else that entered their living room.  :)

My mom was great at this too.  Actually, mom, I don't ever recall snake skins on your wall...how'd you get away from that one?!  So no reptile decor at our house, but this is impressive to me.  My youngest brother was on this hot wheels collecting kick when he was younger.  He had a TON of hot wheels.  He never unwrapped them.  He just would put a pushpin through the little hanger thing-a-ma-jig and hang them all around his room.  His walls were plastered with hot wheels....hundreds.  It never failed that when we went to a store that carried hot wheels, my mom had to stop and search through their stock.  I'd do my best to see if I could find one he didn't have so she could tuck it away for an upcoming birthday.  "I haven't seen this one?"  Oh, nope, he's got that one, my mom would say.   "Oh, this guy is definitely new," I'd say.  No, he has that in blue and orange and purple, she'd reply.  Seriously...my mom knew every hot wheel this boy owned.  Amazing!  That is a mother's love for a son manifested in a beautiful way.

Sheesh! Do I ever have a legacy to live up to! This picture is proof of my progress. Our living room window sill is where Russell wants his Lego creations displayed. I'm not allowed to put them anywhere else. Believe me, I've tried.... :) but I'm being okay with that because he loves to see them every morning when he comes down the stairs for breakfast...and I love that smile on his face and I want him to know that his Lego creations are important to me because they are important to him and he is important to me. This isn't to say we won't try to talk up a "really cool" Lego display shelf to put up in his room so I can close my blinds again...but for now...this window sill works wonderfully.  Don't they look just lovely there?  :)

I laugh at the Pottery Barn Kids catalog every month because they try so hard to make the photos look like real kids' rooms. But real kids have so much more eclectic interests than the skateboards and flowers they decorate with.
