A Grandpa's Love

A little over two and half weeks ago we took our two week old daughter and our two year old son to their great grandfather's funeral. We called him Grandad. The bitter of the bitter-sweet experience is that we will all miss him terribly. The sweet... He left behind an incredible legacy of love. My children's memories of him don't only have to be told through pictures and stories, but they can know that their great-grandfather was in fact, "GRAND", by the way that I love them.

As I was preparing for my Relief Society lesson this Sunday, I had logged onto lds.org. I just happened upon this article that was in January's New Era about this family that has passed on their passion for music from generation to generation. They had a free download to one of their songs and it just happened to be called "Grandpa." Here it is. I think it is fabulous! Even the trumpet. And I don't really prefer trumpets. :) The music has just the sort of twinkle to it that describes a loving grandfather perfectly. If you don't like it at first just give it a chance, and then if you still don't like it, thanks for trying. At least enjoy the lyrics. They are beautiful!

This song couldn't say the feelings of gratitude that have been stirred with my Grandad's passing any better. I am so grateful for the memories I have with him; report card pay days, Sizzler trips, Sea Gypsy visits, pictures and more pictures, tortoises in the freezer, his blue coveralls that he seemed to have a never ending supply of, his fisherman hats, McDonald's cookies, Volvos and Grand Marquis', Garlands, beehives in his backyard, grapefruit and tangelos... But I am even more grateful for the love that he leaves behind. That love can live forever by the way that I live. Thank you, Grandad, for showing us all how to do just that...how to live.
